Karen has featured in many of London’s premier Jazz Clubs including being a featured artist in the MAIN ROOM at Ronnie Scott’s JAZZ CLUB in Soho. She has worked regularly in the acclaimed Pizza Express Jazz Club in London’s Soho. She has repeatedly worked for high-end clients and events including: Bloomberg, Daimler Chrysler, Evian, SkyTV, British Airways, Toyota, Hewlett Packard, Taste of London and Saatchi Gallery.
Karen brings refreshing revamps to standards such as ‘Lullaby of Birdland’, ‘Love Me or Leave Me’. Her arrangements, driven by groove or counterpoint, reflect Lane’s heritage as a soul singer in Sydney’s seedy Kings Cross in the 1990’s where her professional career begun. She is an accomplished songwriter and her original band “Substance” launched in Sydney at the Sydney International Festival in the prestigious Bacardi Club in 1995. Her original compositions have also been featured in a NIDA commissioned dance piece titled “Appetite” – at the Melbourne International Arts Festival.
“I know of noone else who sings with what I can only describe as her demure abandon. It’s wholehearted but at the same time restrained, precisely phrased but not studied a fine and distinctive singer.
Musician Magazine UK – Dave Gelly
“A rare combination of musicianship, technique and just great feel.”
“Lane is a low toned sultry singer who draws the listener in with her intimate way with a lyric. Karen’s music is laid back jazz, meets latin and funk meets lounge sort of vibe.”
“Highly Recommended. A Lovely singer”
Michael Parkinson BBC Radio
“A classy affair executed to the highest musical and technical standards. As accomplished a vocal offering as I’ve heard all year”
“She is justifyably confident in her own ability, to put her own soulful, personal stamp on everything she sings…A thoroughly likeable album from a class act”
“Karen’s unfailingly intelligent and immensely subtle arrangements provide fresh perspectives on even the most well worn standards. Lane’s utterly infectious vocals wrap themselves around delightful Bossa’s.”
“While so many UK-based vocalists merely go through the motions with a real book and piano trio, Karen Lane has surrounded herself with a lighter more flexible group for this bossa inspired album. But what really elevates the sound is the extraordinarily subtle arrangements of strings and alto flutes. Lane’s own compositions are very strong too. Refreshingly good.”
